Women to Watch Award
Since 2006, the MSCPA and AICPA have partnered to honor outstanding women in the profession through the Women to Watch awards. The Woman to Watch awards highlight the accomplishments of women in the profession, and demonstrate to emerging female leaders that success is not out of reach.
Rosalie Newkirk’s work ethic, volunteerism, and mentorship position her as a woman to watch. She earned her degree and passed the CPA exam while raising two young children, and since then has quickly climbed through the ranks.
As a vice president at HSMC Certified Public Accountants in Lee’s Summit, she is known for her quiet grace, attention to detail, and encouraging attitude. Staff members consider her a role model and mentor. Rather than simply correcting errors, she spends time with staff to help them understand their mistakes and learn how to recognize problems. She also works with them individually to help them map out their CPE plan, identifying course areas that would help them reach the next level of their careers.
Perhaps one of Rosalie’s most admirable qualities is her commitment to giving back to her community. Rosalie was instrumental in the establishment of the local Earned Income Tax Credit Tax Preparation Assistance program, which has helped more than 350 low-income individuals secure more than 330 thousand dollars in returns—money that is essential for their day-to-day expenses.
In the past year alone, she has provided individual budget counseling to three single homeless mothers through Hillcrest Transitional Housing. She met with each of these women weekly to review how much money they were earning, what bills needed to be paid, and how they were going to make those payments. At the end of the program, all three had paid off their debt, saved a little money for emergencies, and moved into their own apartments.
In addition, she has served as an MSCPA LEAP ambassador, giving presentations to local students about the accounting profession and hosting job shadow visits. She also volunteers with Wellspring Ministries, the Lee’s Summit Chamber & Economic Development Council, and Rotary International.
“Once in a while, each of us is given the opportunity to meet a very special person. This happened to me when I met Rosalie Newkirk,” says Teresa Wright, executive director, Wellspring Ministries.
